Get to Know Carl
Carl’s love for metalworking started in the late Fifties when he attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, PA. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1960 while working after classes and on weekends as an auto body repairman. Through this job, he learned the craft of specialty metal shaping used in repairing, restoring, and customizing cars.
He revisited his interest in automotive body work after retiring in 1998. In addition, he moved to Carmel Valley, CA, where he designed and built custom cars until 2016. During this time, Carl realized that the tools he had been using to personalize vehicles in his shop were perfect for turning metal into art.
This discovery led him to open his own studio, where he works as a metal artist, designing and building unique pieces. His studio borders an olive grove where he, his wife of 63 years, and their family grow olives. These fruits are used to make cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil marketed under the brand Fattoria Muia.

Carl’s Other Career Highlights
Before he established Sheet Metal Happens and impressed customers nationwide with his stunning abstract metal sculptures, Carl did the following:
Spent over 40 years in the aerospace, defense, and contract engineering service industries of Seattle, WA, as part of the Engineering Corporation of America
Spent several years doing business in Russia and other Eastern European countries
Served as a reserve police officer for the King County Sheriff’s Office in Washington from 1975 to 2003 (He worked undercover for 22 of those years.)
